Te Papa Ward
The Te Papa ward has a rich tapestry of history and features a number of historically significant sites from The Elms Te Papa Tauranga and Otamatahi Pa (Mission Cemetery) in the city centre to Pukehinahina (Gate Pa) and Tutarawananga - Yatton Park in Tauranga South, which is nationally significant arboretum, home to exotic and native trees planted around 1866.
This
ward is home to nearly 17,000 people and includes Te Papa Peninsula,
Sulphur Point, CBD, Fraser Cove, Gate Pa, Tauranga South, Merivale, Yatton Park
and Greerton (north of Chadwick Road).
Tauranga’s city centre is on its way to being transformed into an even greater place for people to live, work, visit, learn and play. Over the coming years the civic precinct is being developed, breathing new life into what will become a key cultural, heritage and economic driver for the region.
Te Manawataki o Te Papa, meaning ‘the heartbeat of Te Papa’ will feature a progressive new library and community hub, a civic whare (public meeting space), exhibition gallery and a museum that will offer direct access to the city’s taonga and heritage collection. The new civic precinct will be a drawcard for visitors from near and far, with so much to see and experience.
Plans are also coming to life at Tauranga Waterfront with projects underway that celebrate the connection the community has to Te Awanui Tauranga Harbour. The upgraded waterfront area will provide better access to the harbour in the city centre for people to take part in a range of activities around and on the water.
In the coming years, people will be able to move easily between Te Awanui Tauranga Harbour and our new civic precinct, Te Manawataki o Te Papa, through the newly upgraded Masonic Park.
