Tauriko Settlers Hall demolition

We’re removing the old Tauriko Settlers Hall, which is no longer fit for purpose.

The Tauriko Settlers Hall, owned by Tauranga City Council and managed by Bay Venues, is no longer fit for purpose based on the TCC Community Centres Action and Investment Plan 2023.

The hall was built in the late 1930s and is now at a point that it is no longer viable to remain open. After much consideration, due to the building’s poor condition and age, and the cost of required repairs, Council has determined that the best course of action is to demolish and rebuild a better facility to meet the needs of the growing Tauriko community. We plan to build a new community centre and library (a ‘Suburban Hub Centre’) as part of the future Tauriko West development.

TCC and Bay Venues have successfully worked with all regular community users of the hall to secure new locations for their activities. The last day of use of the hall will be Friday 30 August 2024.

The demolition will take place during the Term 3 school holidays, between Monday 30 September and Sunday 13 October 2024, with some preparatory works carried out throughout September.

As partners in the Tauriko Enabling Works, we’re working closely with NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi on the improvements to SH29. As a result we’ve been able to coordinate this demolition with upcoming works on the neighbouring service station site. Aligning their timing will minimise the impact on neighbouring properties and users of the state highway.

The works

Preparatory work will begin from 31 August, over one or two weeks, with a small digger operating on site to disconnect the electrical and wastewater services in advance of the demolition. At this time we will also salvage any suitable timber flooring, internal cladding and joinery for use in other community buildings in Tauranga.

The demolition itself will be completed during the Term 3 school holidays, from Monday 30 September to Sunday 13 October, to minimise disruption to the neighbouring Tauriko School and Playcentre.

Our contractors A&J Demolition and Salvage Specialists will work between 7am and 5pm from Monday to Friday and if required, 7.30am to 2pm on Saturdays. Traffic management will be place during the school holidays.

A&J Demolition, certified asbestos removalists, will work to safely demolish the building. This work will create significant noise and some vibration at times, but presents no safety risks for neighbouring properties. With machinery on their site, the Playcentre will close for the duration of the works.

Once the demolition is complete, TCC will reinstate the site as grass space for use by the Playcentre.
