Oceanbeach Road resurfacing – partial road closure

Why are we doing it?

We’re resurfacing a section of Oceanbeach Road as part of our annual resurfacing programme. This work protects the foundations of our roads and prevents potholes, making getting around the city – by bike, vehicle, mobility aid or on foot – safer and easier.

Project timing

The work will be completed in two stages and is expected to take three weeks (weather dependent).

Stage one: Sunday, 22 September – Thursday, 26 September, nightworks only (7pm - 6am)

Stage two: Sunday, 29 September – Sunday, 13 October, dayworks only, closure 24/7 including weekends

During these periods, there will be a one-way lane closure on Oceanbeach Road between Concord Avenue and Golf Road.

Traffic management

Oceanbeach Road will be closed between Concord Avenue and Golf Road for traffic heading towards Mauao. A detour will be in place, directing traffic via Girven Road, Maunganui Road, and Golf Road to get back onto Oceanbeach Road.

Oceanbeach Road will still be open on this section of road for traffic heading towards Pāpāmoa.

During the nightworks (stage one), there will also be no right turn onto Golf Road from Oceanbeach Road and access to Concord Avenue may be affected at times.

We apologise for any inconvenience while this work is completed and thank you for your patience.

A reminder that there is no right turn onto Maunganui Road from Concord Avenue. This is part of the established road layout.

FAQs

Why are you doing this work?
Road resurfacing is the way we protect the foundations of our roads and prevent potholes. It makes getting around the city – by bike, vehicle, mobility aid or on foot – safer and easier.
Every year we resurface 4-5% of our roads with hot mix asphalt or chip seal. With a total of approximately 630km of road network, we resurface approx. 25-30km per annum. This is to ensure a safe surface for vehicles by providing texture and to protect the underlying road pavement layers by waterproofing. Oceanbeach Road will be resurfaced with asphalt.

What does the work involve?
The old asphalt surface is removed using a milling machine, then any minor repairs are carried out and the new asphalt is laid. Traffic cannot travel over the new surface until it has cooled down. Within 2-3 days line markings, traffic loops and special surfaces are reinstated.

How will this impact parking?
Parking will not be available within the worksite.

How will I access my property?
Generally access to residents’ properties will be available but some coordination with traffic management staff may be required.
