Beaumaris Boulevard: Reducing risk from flooding

We are improving stormwater drainage through the intersection of Beaumaris Boulevard and Sterling Gate Drive with the addition of two box culverts.

Latest update

Work has begun to improve the management of flood water in Bethlehem as it flows under the Beaumaris Boulevard / Sterling Gate Drive roundabout. This involves the installation of additional culverts below the roundabout with completion in early 2025.

From Monday, 16 September excavation begins on site. One lane through the roundabout will close with alternating one-way only traffic between Waihi Road and Beaumaris Boulevard. Access to the roundabout from Sterling Gate Drive will now close and we expect this closure to be in place until Christmas. A detour will guide drivers back to Cambridge Road and access to Beaumaris Boulevard will be from Waihi Road. Please note, access remains into Sterling Gate from Beaumaris Boulevard throughout.

A reduced speed of 30km/hour will be in place through the work zone.

If you enjoy walking in the area, a footpath diversion is in place around the work site with signage guiding your path.

Why are we doing it?

Tauranga City Council is improving the stormwater infrastructure to safeguard properties located near the intersection of Sterling Gate and Beaumaris Boulevard. Two additional box culverts are being installed under Beaumaris Boulevard at the roundabout with Sterling Gate Drive. This allows stormwater to flow downstream and will reduce the buildup of flood water around properties at the bottom of Sterling Gate Drive. These works will ensure the flood risk is reduced for a 1-in-100-year event.

Safety barriers downstream on State Highway 2 have already been replaced in late 2023 to ensure flood water does not build up on the highway.

Project timing

6 months - commencing 2 September 2024, with completion in early 2025.

Traffic management:

We understand Beaumaris Boulevard is a high traffic thoroughfare between Bethlehem and the city. During the initial setup, and throughout the construction period, the roundabout will remain open to alternating one-way only traffic with stop/go traffic management directing drivers. A reduced speed of 30km/hour will be in place through the work site.

As the culvert installation begins, access to the roundabout from Sterling Gate will be closed. We expect this closure to be in place from early September until Christmas. A detour will guide drivers back to Cambridge Road and access to Beaumaris Boulevard will be from Waihi Road. Please note, access remains into Sterling Gate from Beaumaris Boulevard throughout.

If you enjoy walking in the area, a footpath diversion will be in place around the work site with signage guiding your path.
