Improved safety along the Te Ara ō Wairākei pathways

To improve safety along the Te Ara ō Wairākei pathways, we upgraded the access points at Hartford Avenue, Pacific View Road, and Santa Monica Drive. We also completed safety improvements along the shared pathway linking James Henry Avenue and Kahira Crescent.

Preserving the green space and beauty of the trees at the sites was important, so we worked with an arborist to minimise the construction's impact on the trees.

The work is complete and included:

Hartford Avenue

  • upgrading the Hartford Avenue pathway to a 3m shared pathway, linking it to the existing gravel pathways
  • a new raised pedestrian crossing
  • a gravel footpath connecting the new raised pedestrian crossing to the existing gravel footpath on the Barbara Grove side of Hartford Avenue
  • reducing the width of a section of the existing path to 1.5m and replacing the grass.

Pacific View Road

  • widening the trailhead for the Te Ara ō Wairākei pathway to accommodate shared path use
  • creating cycle ramps from the road to the trail
  • painting of cyclist and pedestrian shared path markings in reflectorised paint
  • extending the no-stopping lines at the entrance of the cycle ramp.

Santa Monica Drive

  • widening the existing pram crossing and surrounding footpath to 3m to accommodate shared path use
  • painting of cyclist and pedestrian shared path markings in reflectorised paint
  • painting yellow no-stopping lines at the entrance of the crossing
  • upgrading other road markings at the site
  • upgrading the kerb layout according to the new layout.

The new painted warning signs and staggered non-slip blocks will enhance safety and visibility and decrease pedestrian and cyclist entry speeds into the pathway linking James Henry Drive and Kahira Crescent.
